ROBIN MASON AND BOCKLIN'S ISLE OF THE DEAD
Robin Mason (born in Porthcawl, South Wales, 1958): "In Homage to Böcklin’s Rock, his previous body of work, Mason was inspired by the fifth version of the sombre Island of the Dead painting by Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) and created a counterbalance in his paintings to the gloomy spirit of the Böcklin’s Rock thus: “This painting by Böcklin, which brings in thousands of visitors each year, holds people with it’s mystery and fear. From this pessimism Mason has managed to make paintings of joy, hope out of despair”.
