PASCAL LECOCQ AND BOCKLIN'S ISLE OF THE DEAD
I should have seen and hear about Böcklin's "Isle of the dead" for the first time in Dali's work (may be 1973-74). Dali is my "father" in art I was very impressed about his references. I'm still doing parodies or homage. In the same time the connection with Wagner was important to me too (Böcklin should make the set design of Wagner's Ring in Bayreuth 1876).
Bôcklin's paintings of the Isle met my interest of buidinsg making their own world (as lifeguard station, tower, fabriques, capriccio...), with his stage building. Meanings for decades, include in this small piece of art were also for me attractive.
I made a special trip to Bâle to see the painting (1987 ?), then I went to Berlin (1990) where i bought a nice poster still hanged in my French studio. I saw the painting in New York (2000). Finally, I saw the Leipzig version, and again the Bâle one, in paris Orsay when they made the Böcklin's retrospective in 2001.
